LESSON 7

KYA, KYU, KYO, GYA, GYU, GYO, SHA, SHU, SHO, CHA, CHU, CHE, CHO, NYA, NYU, NYO, MYA, MYU, MYO

Hello, once again. We've completely exhausted the main part of the syllabary and the dakunten and handakuten parts. Now, it's time to move onto the dipthongs. From this point forward, I'm not introducing anything new. All of it will be review from here on out. What I plan to then do is the following. I'll show you what each of these characters looks like. If you're having trouble remembering them, I've linked the lesson where you first learned them to this page. If all else fails, you can go back and look at how it is written. Gomen, I don't have any pronunciation keys for this but Reiko-san will have a sound byte for you and there will be examples.

I'd like to take a minute and explain what all these dipthongs are. Mostly, dipthongs are a combination of <Constant>+I and followed by a small YA, YU, YO. Other combinations of a big character and a small character could be other sounds (e.g., like FI which you'll learn in the final lesson) or it could be a small TSU (which indicates a pause should be taken).
Also, here are the steps for drawing all of these kana. First, draw the big main character first. Second, draw the dakuten or handakuten. Finally, draw the second character and make sure that it's smaller than the first. If it's not, you'll get a completely different sound and meaning.

Well, let's get started then.
