Observing Notes - 06/09/2017 Observatory: WIRO Observers : Jackson Cole, Cristilyn Cortez, Kyla Jarka, Daniel Rivera Notes: - Cryocooler temperature resting at ~-130 deg when we arrived, and took approximately an hour to warm to -110 deg. - Wind started getting bad around 6:15 UTC with gusts above 40 mph and averages in the upper 20s. The lower wind screen was raised much earlier in the night to account for some significant gusts, but we eventually opted to close the dome shutters and the mirror covers at 6:15 UTC to protect the telescope from wind/debris if there was any. - The weather station was reading around 22 mph for a couple hours, but we were seeing averages of greater than 30 mph with gusts around 40 mph at several points on Weather Underground (which supposedly is showing wind speeds at lower elevations). - 8:54 UTC Update: At this point, we have been taking darks and biases for about an hour or two to give the weather some time to settle down, which it has not done. - Although the official weather stations in WIRO are reading less than the 30 mph limit, we are making the executive decision to cease future attempts at observing at 9:22 UTC due to wind speeds that are very clearly greater than 30 mph (we watched the telescope shake several hours ago, and the dome has been shaking very strongly off and on for several hours). We also stepped outside and determined that the wind is getting pretty crazy altogether (please excuse the lack of formality...). - At this point, we are out of transit and we have determined that it is likely unsafe to reopen the dome. Further, we would likely only be able to get a few out-of-transit data points which would likely be less useful due to the turbulent winds.
