Zone 14 Meeting
February 22-23, 2019
University of Wyoming
Laramie WY
Laramie is about 2 hours north of Denver. My personal recommendation is to take US 287 from Fort Collins to Laramie: it is a prettier drive, more protected from winds, and shorter than I-25 to I-80 through Cheyenne.
Here is a campus map with relevant locations marked:

If you are coming in Friday night, come visit our Planetarium and enjoy
a show. Just say that you are will SPS and you'll get free admission!
We will meet in STEM 195 on Saturday morning.
The STEM (Enzi) Building is on the north side of campus. Free street parking is available along 9th Street, just be sure to avoid areas signed as "Permit Only." There is a lot near Ivinson and 10th that should be free after 5pm and on weekends as well.

Topic:Physics, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (PIE)
How physics is an especially robust platform for creating products and services with profound human impact
A brief overview will describe a current national effort to encourage physics programs to include innovation and entrepreneurship education as opportunities for their students.Click for more detail on PIE.
Examples of recent initiatives in the Denver region will be described, including a physics student innovators group calledPSI* as well as two student-created companies. Then we will use a physics innovation game to actively identify ways to use physics knowledge and available technologies to meet a human need and define a potential innovation. At the end we pose a question: what specific topics would you need to learn to turn this possibility into an actual implementation?
- Speaker 3: Kerry Kidwell
Topic: Careers Toolbox Workshop
Did you know that more than 40% of all undergraduate physics majors enter the workforce directly after graduation? In this workshop we’ll explore the career options that are available to students with degrees in physics and steps you can take now to make yourself a competitive candidate. Whether you are looking for that first job, seeking a summer internship, or even just wondering what will happen after graduate school this session will have something for you.

Restaurant Recommendations
Near the Hotel:
(I don't frequent this end of town particularly often, and anyway it's mostly chain restaurants)
- Coal Creek Coffee - Way better than Starbucks.
- Almanza's - Great breakfast burritos.
- Corona Village Andale Rapido - Excellent burritos and enchiladas. Same owners as Corona Village, see below.
- O'Dwyer's - Irish pub, great food.
- The Black Kilt - Excellent sandwich place. Their meats are roasted in-house at O'Dwyer's. Huge sandwiches and salads. Service is slow.
- Niko Steak and Sushi - Good lunch deals.
Downtown:
- Altitude - Brewery and restaurant. One of my favorites. We often bring colloquium speakers here.
- Lovejoy's - Same owners as Altitude. A little more casual, and not quite as good.
- Crowbar - Best burgers in town. Great pizza, too. Try the poutine or Thai fries.
- Jeffrey's - Kind of an eclectic menu, generally pretty good.
- Roxie's - The brick oven pizza is very good.
- Sweet Melissa's & Front Street Bar - Excellent vegetarian food. Even meat-eaters like it!
- Thai Spice - Best Thai food in town.
- Anong's - Second best Thai food in town.
- Prairie Rose - Local greasy spoon, best breakfast in town.
- Alibi = Great wood-fired pizza, excellent bread.
- Library - Sports bar and brewery with a funny name.
- Mizu Sushi - The sushi is pretty good, considering. Vietnamese food offered too.
- Coal Creek Coffee and Taproom - Worth going just to check out their espresso machine. Beers are pretty heavy - not my style, but some people love them. Not much in the way of food, but sometimes there is a food truck outside.
- Born in a Barn - Wings! I love wings!!
Elsewhere:
- Cavalryman - Just south of town on US-287. Come here if you want a Real Wyoming steakhouse experience. Pricey, but the food is excellent.
- Turtle Rock - On the west edge of campus. Great coffee and sandwiches.
- Corona Village - Near 3rd and I-80, next to the Motel 8. Excellent Mexican food.
