Virgo Cluster Elliptical

HST image of VCC 1104 in Virgo (9-hours with HST):

A small elliptical galaxy in the Virgo Cluster of galaxies is resolved into a multitude of stars for the first time. Measurements of the apparent brightness of these stars allows the distance of this galaxy to be measured, and thereby provides a calibration of the expansion age of the universe.
