Standing Waves applet
This applet will help you understand the displacement and pressure graphs of sound waves in pipes. It shows a graph along with an animation of the air molecules in the pipe.
- To change the tube type, click on both sides open, one side open, or both sides closed.
- To change the graph type, click on displacement or pressure.
- To change the vibrational mode, click the Higher or Lower buttons.
You can choose from the fundamental up to the 5th overtone.
- To recalculate wavelength and frequency, enter a new value for Length of tube from 0.1 m to 10.0 m.
The values are calculated at 20 °C (speed of sound at 343.5 m/s) and neglecting influences of the tube's diameter.
